Recent Landscape Work

So I know I have not written too many posts regarding my landscape work but here is a swift update as to what and where i have been shooting. (with a few examples). I’ve recently updated some of my filters to incorporate more Lee filters, specifically the medium grad ND set as well as the Super stopper (which cuts out 15 stops of light without casing undue colour shifts). Ive been to Wales, Yorkshire, Mallorca and Cornwall lately and my kit has obviously travelled with me. below is a few examples of recent work, more can be seen on my website which is always being updated. Amongst one of the recent changes is is a link to buy my prints, which i am happy to say is going well. Image 1: Sennen at Sunset.

This was shot on the clips overlooking Sennen Cove. The heather was in full bloom and literally covered the cliffs with a rich, deep purple colour which lit up with the warmth of the setting sun behind it. I used my Lee Hard Grad 0.9 ND here, to bring back the sky.

Image 2: Pembrokeshire estuary at sunset.

I spent a week on the Pembrokeshire coast in October of this year. the weather was shocking, but a few nights the clouds cleared and i was able to get out and take some landscapes. This was taken on the Atlantic Ocean estuary, a very peaceful and remote part of Pembrokeshire. Again, i used a 0.9 Hard grad ND filter from Lee Filters to balance sky and horizon.

A very popular location for landscape work. This Yorkshire landmark is stunning so you can see why photographers flock there. It was a relatively stormy day which added a lot of interest to the sky. I used my 0.6 Hard Grad ND for the sky here to darken it slightly to add more mood to the shot. In all these images I used my canon 5Dsr and my Zeiss f2.8 21mm Distagon Lens, which is really my go-to lens for landscape work (wide angle use anyway). it really is a beautifully shape lens. Looking at getting the wider version soon, 18mm I believe.

Shoot for Happiful Magazine

I was asked to shoot for Happiful magazine who were doing a feature on the Amy Winehouse foundation. I was asked to take a couple of portraits of two girls who were staying there and one councillor. The foundation itself opens its doors to a select number of women each year to give free accommodation for two years, counselling and help getting them back on their feet after suffering abuse in one form or another, be that alcohol, drug or domestic violence. I wanted to keep the portraits quite natural in terms of lighting and the subjects strong yet relaxed in pose. very minimal work done in post, just some levels and some saturation changes. enjoy.

Portrait Shoot of Marco pierre White

I was asked to shoot some portraits of Marco Pierre White for an editorial feature of his newly revamped restaurant and hotel called The Rudloe arms Just outside Bath. It is a gorgeous Hotel with stunning interiors (and if you love good photography, it has an amazing array of photos taken by the likes of Bob Carlos Clarke and Terry O’Niel). The portraits themselves were left up to me in regards to how i wanted to light them. I wanted low key portraits to fit the image of Marco which is Moody (he could not have been nicer as it turned out). The First portrait i shot was with two heads, one shooting down lighting the staircase with a large trolley and the other was a gridded softbox  above camera. I tried to balance the light so it was even from front to back. (Image 1)

Th Other Image was a much darker image, just spotted with a snoot with a gridded dish for the back to lift him slightly off the background.

Shoot at a craft brewery

I have a long running project about craft food/drinks producers that i am working on constantly and after having shot various drinks makers (vodka distillers in Brooklyn, NYC and a champagne makers in Hampshire) i wanted to shoot a brewery and Bath has a fantastic one called The Electric Bear, which has one countless awards already for its ale. I love backlighting subjects anyway so this gave me a chance to do just that. I knew there would be lots of steam/smoke from the various tanks so backlighting it would add more drama. I wanted to capture the whole process from initial brewing to distribution. A lot of the shots were shot wide open to add more flare with a fair bit being retouched to remove branding and lighting stands! I had the luxury of attaching lights to an overhead mezzanine to increase the general light levels and override any tungsten that was floating around, this made my job a lot easier and was almost like shooting in daylight apart from working with my main key light which was the backlight.It was a good chance to try out my new canon 5DSr in a testing environment, lots of steam and heat basically. It worked and performed really well and the quality of the final images were amazing. I have included a few images here and more can be seen through my agency (image source). Portraits for London Communications Agency Website

I was asked to shoot portraits for London Communications agency, a client of mine I have worked for for many years now. The portraits were going to have quite a contrasty and slightly desaturated feel (the sort of feel I love putting on my portraits). The light was quite channeled and I used a beauty dish for this off to the side to give some shadow, I initially put a honeycomb grid in but was too harsh even for this shoot so a white shoot through cover was added which was perfect. the background was cleanly lit white and I wanted a clip light on one side of the face. I had an extra head to the side with a brolly and it was about 3/4 of a stop hotter than the from light which gave a nice clip which just lifts the shadow and gives a nice dynamic to the face, this of course had to be poly-boarded off to avoid lens flare as it was shooting back into the lens slightly. Below are a few examples. Yes they are portraits on a white background but it’s nice to make them as interesting as possible and good, strong lighting is the best way. Enjoy!

PS. recently got my hands on the new Lowepro Pro Trekker 450 AW which is an outstanding bag! you can fit so much in it, numerous lenses, 2 bodies, cables for my laptop and hard drives, all the other little extras you can think off for a studio shoot but its also outstanding for outdoors and my landscape work.. it even had a camel back water pouch space for summer shooting.. Genius..!

Dunkin Donuts Lifestyle and interiors shoot in Sweden

I was asked by Dunkin Donuts america to shoot two stores that had opened in Sweden. The brief was two-fold and included shooting moody interiors to show of the subdued and subtle lighting, plus get a range of lifestyle shots of staff and customers smiling, eating and interacting with customers and each other. Both Stores were in around the Stockholm area (beautiful city, go if you get a chance). There was not really much call for lighting on this shoot. I brought two speed lights that were really used to clean up faces and blast away any unwanted colour casts from ambient or artificial lighting. The Interiors were shot as is, the only thing (and utterly essential) was a circular polariser filter. I only use Lee filters and their 105mm circular polariser on the Lee adaptor ring is amazing. The polariser allows me to minimise reflections from glass and also control the brightness of monitors and internal lighting by twisting the filter.

I shot the majority of my interiors on two fixed lenses. The first was a 21mm carl zeiss distagon lens and the other was the 35mm equivalent. These lenses are unbelievable sharp and the colour rendition you get is outstanding. They were purchased while i was in New York in February shooting this ( brooklyn vodka distillery shoot) and are great lenses to have in your bag for interiors and landscapes. They are manual focus but don’t let that deter you, we all survived quite well before auto focus came along 😉
